Roman Numeral Calculator App for Android 4

We have just released a small Android app. A little bit of a novelty, this is a pocket calculator for Roman Numerals!

Roman Calculator with the Decimal Keyboard displayed

This works like a conventional pocket calculator albeit without decimal points. Side-by-side displays simultaneously show the calculations using decimal and roman numeral notation. You may also choose between decimal or roman entry:

The Roman Calculator App is free to download from the Google Play Store.

Is there any real world application for this app?!

🙂 Well Roman Numerals are still in use, as well as being used in historic contexts.

The calculator aspect is partly inspired by Claude Shannon who actually built a Roman Numeral Calculator – just because.

Yes this is a novelty app. It is not intended as a profit centre. More of an exercise in putting together an app and using the various publication / analytical tools.
We are investigating other (more useful!) Android app ideas, but nothing definite yet.

The Roman Numeral Calculator has been updated so that calculated values can be copied to the clipboard, and the calculation record is now preserved when switching between keyboards.

Another update from a few months ago, is that the calculator can now take voice input: “What is 3 plus V?” etc.

Note: Unfortunately Google’s voice recognition does get confused between multiply and ‘X’ (as in the digit)
