The Battle of Winwaed: Alternative Histories

Alternate histories are a popular game, so what might the Winwaed alternative history be?

The alternative would have been for Penda's superior forces to have defeated Oswy. It is likely that Christianity would have still prevailed, but it would have taken a few more decades to be adopted by the entire Anglo-Saxon world.

But the Synod at Whitby in 664 would not have occurred, and we can only guess at the final position of Northumbria and Mercia. Without the negotiation skills of Elfeda, perhaps the Celtic Church of Columba would have prevailed? If it did, then how long would it have lasted? Would the Normans have felt the influence of a stronger Celtic Church (and possibly converted???), before William invaded England in 1066?
