So Who is this Challis Bloke Anyway?
The team originally started with distributed.net's attempt to crack RSA's RC5-64 Challenge, followed by the DES contests. These have now been completed, and we are now competing on distributed.net's RC5-72 and OGR (Optimum Golomb Ruler) projects.
In the early days of RC5-64, we competed against other Cambridge teams and then other UK teams. Our continued growth, meant that by mid-June (1998) we had become the UK's consistently fastest team. Within days of Egham Hills writing a letter to New Scientist claiming that this was not so; we overtook Egham Hills in distributed.net's Overall Rankings. From 1998 through to the end of the RC5-64 project, we maintained our position as the highest ranked UK team. We are currently the highest ranked UK team in the OGR project.
The team is open to anyone! In fact, a whole team (Elite Alliance) joined us during the RC5-64 project. We have some instructions telling you how to join us.
To date, we have a wide range of machines working for the team, although most are PCs. Individual machine speeds vary considerably from 386s to the latest Pentium 4s. Check our team summary pages and Jon Atkins' graphs (see links at top) for the current status of our effort.
Prof. James Challis' Most Excellent UK Team also works on the SETI@Home project, the climateprediction.net project, the NFSNet Project, and the grid.org projects.
